How does the every extended weekend child custody schedule work?

There are innumerable ways by which parents can divide their child custody time. Some parents opt for a schedule known as the "every extended weekend plan." This plan may not be appropriate for all parents because it allows one parent to always have the children on the weekends with a little bit of extra time added to the beginning and end of each weekend.

This means that the other parent will have the children during the work week when the children are at school and may not be able to spend as much quality free time with the children.

Here's a typical example of how the every extended weekend schedule works:

  • The children are under the weekend parent's care beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
  • The children remain with the weekend parent the entire weekend.
  • The children are under the weekday parent's care beginning on Monday at 9 p.m.
  • The children remain under the care of the weekday parent until Friday at 3 p.m.

For two parents who maintain traditional Monday through Friday, 9-to-5 work schedules, the every extended weekend plan might not be appropriate because the children will only have a limited amount of free time with the weekday parent. However, for parents who have unusual work schedules, perhaps when one parent works on the weekends and the other parent works during the normal work week, this schedule might work well.
